Ethical Shopping Guide: Target stores

literaturecouture:

This series of posts is, like my Cheat Sheets, designed to demystify products so you can get what you need and get out of the store with your sanity intact. I wanted to expand my line of posts to include guides to shopping at major cosmetics retailers. My first attempt is this post, which points out ethically made brands and cosmetic products available at Target.   To be included in this post, all brands had to meet a certain minimum threshold, including:

  • no animal testing
  • no report of human rights abuses (for example, using sweatshops or child labor)
  • no reports of environmental abuse
Keep in mind these criteria are the absolute bare minimum. I wanted to give you as wide a range of products as possible while still meeting a threshold of ethical action. Things I look for beyond these minimum criteria include:
  • GLBT-friendly work policies
  • family-friendly work policies (on-site day care, maternity/paternity leave, etc.)
  • Fair Trade certifications
  • use of organic ingredients where possible
  • support of sustainability initiatives
  • recycled packaging materials
  • manufacturing plants in union-friendly states or countries
  • Adherence to the standards set out in the European Union’s Cosmetics Regulation, which sets out standards for labeling and use of certain chemicals. (Companies need not be based in Europe as long as their actions fall in the parameters of the EU legislation.)
  • lack of extravagant or unwarranted claims about the product’s results
  • socially responsible advertising
Whew! Okay, on to the brands. I’ve organized this as a slide show; Tumblr users, click here to see the slides. If you’re in the store and can’t call up the slides on your phone, I’ve listed the brands after the photos Brands included in the Slideshow:
